Jn 6:24-35

Gospel

Jn 6:24-35

When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus. And when they found him across the sea they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?" Jesus answered them and said, "Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled. Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on l him the Father, God, has set his seal." So they said to him, "What can we do to accomplish the works of God?" Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent." So they said to him, "What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you? What can you do? Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat." So Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." So they said to him, "Sir, give us this bread always." Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst."

Sermon

My brothers and sisters in Christ, today’s Gospel reading presents us with a profound teaching from Jesus. The crowd, having been fed physically by Jesus, now seeks him out, but Jesus reveals that their motivation is misguided. They are seeking him for the wrong reasons, looking for physical satisfaction rather than spiritual nourishment.

Jesus redirects their focus, pointing them to the "food that endures for eternal life," which he, the Son of Man, will give. He teaches them that the work of God is to believe in the one he sent, and that he is the true bread from heaven, come to give life to the world.

This passage teaches us:

1. The danger of seeking physical satisfaction over spiritual nourishment.
2. The importance of believing in Jesus, the one sent by God.
3. The identity of Jesus as the bread of life, come to satisfy our deepest hunger and thirst.

May we seek Jesus for the right reasons, desiring spiritual nourishment over physical satisfaction. May we believe in him, and may we find our satisfaction in him alone.

Prayer

Let us pray: + In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Almighty, merciful and loving God,

Help us to seek Jesus for the right reasons, desiring spiritual nourishment over physical satisfaction. May we believe in him, and may we find our satisfaction in him alone.

Forgive us for seeking physical satisfaction over spiritual nourishment, and redirect our focus to the "food that endures for eternal life" that Jesus offers.

Thank you for sending Jesus, the true bread from heaven, to give life to the world. May we believe in him and find our satisfaction in him alone.

May our deepest hunger and thirst be satisfied in Jesus, the bread of life.

In Jesus' most holy name we pray, Amen.

+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you,
