John 6:41-51
Gospel
John 6:41-51
The Jews murmured about Jesus because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven, "
and they said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother? Then how can he say, 'I have come down from heaven'?" Jesus answered and said to them, "Stop murmuring
among yourselves. No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. It is written in the prophets: They shall all be taught by God. Everyone who
listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has
eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am the living
bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world."
Sermon
My brothers and sisters in Christ, today’s Gospel reading presents us with a profound teaching from Jesus. He declares himself to be the bread that came down from heaven, and the Jews murmur in
disbelief.
This passage teaches us:
1. The divine origin of Jesus, who comes from heaven to give us life.
2. The necessity of faith, which is a gift from the Father, to come to Jesus.
3. The promise of eternal life for those who believe in Jesus.
4. The symbolism of Jesus as the living bread, who gives us spiritual nourishment.
May we, like the Jews, be drawn to Jesus, the bread of life. May we believe in him, and may we receive eternal life. May we be nourished by his presence, and may we be raised on the last day.
Prayer
Let us pray: + In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Almighty, merciful and loving God,
We thank you for sending Jesus, the bread of life, to nourish us spiritually and give us eternal life. Help us to believe in him and receive the gift of faith, which comes from you.
May we be drawn to Jesus, like the Jews, and may we be fed by his presence. May we never hunger or thirst, for we have Jesus, the living bread.
May we listen to your voice and learn from you, that we may come to Jesus and receive eternal life. May we be raised on the last day, and may we live forever in your presence.
In Jesus' most holy name we pray, Amen.
+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you,
